At the Kabul Zoo, black bear Donatella enjoyed playing with her mate.
Donatella was a
war victim too, sharing the fate of other Afghan women. Her nose was
partly cut off
by a Taliban commander. Since 2002 she was under medical care by military
vets of the
international forces. Despite this, no treatment proved to be effective
and her condition
gradually detoriated. Early 2004 it appeared that an infection in her
nose had spread to
the
central nervous system and the quality of her life would not improve.
Therefore she
was put to sleep in March 2004. The Zoo is step by step being rehabilitated
with foreign aid,
and the remaining animals (deer,
wolves, various birds, monkeys, bears, and a lion) are
treated well according the circumstances
