Back to Kabul

Zarina (16 years), Belkes' niece, helps schoolboys with their homework after school.
With this she earns 100 Afghani per month (around € 1,50/GBP 1,-). Her mother
Wasfia (Belkes' sister-in-law) is a widow. Her husband was arrested in Pakistan after
he fled with wife and children from Afghanistan at the end of the 1980s. After being
imprisoned none has seen him back again since, the limited information the family has
received says he died under obscure circumstances. Since their return from Pakistan
in 2002, Wasfia has a job as charwoman at a school. However, due to the poor financial
situation of the educational system, she has not received a salary for 8 months. She
continues to work because she feels it is important for her social contacts and to make
herself useful for society. Therefore, Zarina's little income is a welcome contribution
