Singh - will be continued 2003

Photo series made during the Chris de Bode Masterclass at Fotogram, Amsterdam NL. Aim of this series is to picture the life of a so called economical refugee - someone who came to The Netherlands to find work - and the balance he has to find between his own background and his life in The Netherlands. Gurjinder Singh is from the Punjab, India. He came to The Netherlands more than 15 years ago. After a while he found a job at a delicatessen store in Amsterdam. There he works amidst French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch cheeses, home made patés, Italian Parma ham, smoked salmon, French bread and various wines. The store also has a delivery service, daily preparing rolls and salads for parties and business lunches of many companies in Amsterdam center. Gurjinder is married and has a son and a daughter. His wife Rani is taking driving lessons and his son attends the nearby kindergarten. Both Sikhs and raising their children in the same tradition, Gurjinder and Rani visit the gurdwara (temple) with them on special occasions.
