Unrestricted Sight 2003

This project is initiated by the SWLG Foundation for Home Facilities for the Physically Handicapped, Purmerend NL. The SWLG celebrated her 25th anniversary in 2003. Also, 2003 was the Year of the Handicapped. Aim of the photo series is to adjust the perception of the "outside world" regarding physically handicapped people. That is, to show a different, unexpected and unknown aspect of the physically handicapped. Most people have immediately an opinion made up when they see a physically handicapped person. The person in question is of course a pitiful being, no doubt also mentally retarded and is sitting at home all day doing nothing. One communicates in a childish way or only via a (physical able) companion if there; the physically handicapped person is stared at or avoided as if he/she is the first appearance as such in human history. One easily forgets that handicaps are as old as mankind and that everybody, at a certain moment in life can become handicapped as well. In "Unrestricted Sight" 18 inhabitants of the Home of the SWLG participated. The photo series wants to let the "outside world" look beyond the handicap, without being "restricted" by the first, superficial impression.
