International - MIXT Racism Beat It festival 2001
At the MIXT Racism Beat It festival, Amnesty International organized
a campaign against torture in the Franco da Rocha youth prison in São
Paulo, Brazil. The Brazilian football player Marco Marquinho (PSV, NL)
was one of the participants of the campaign. During a control visit
in the Franco da Rocha prison in March 2001 by forensic doctors, it
appeared that 240 out of 302 prisoners showed wounds indicating ill-treatment
or torture. Amnesty International appealed to the Brazilian government
to protect these youths in prison against torture and to punish the
offenders. At the festival visitors were appealed to protest against
the torture of prisoners. For a Brazilian touch of the campaign, Marquinho
and two colleagues gave a demonstration football technics, and salsa
and capoeira demonstrations and workshops were organized.
